Did you know that you can improve your oral health simply by improving your flossing techniques? Flossing is one of the most important aspects of your oral health care along with brushing and should be done at least once every day. Brushing your teeth cannot effectively reach between teeth, so floss must be used to clean areas your brush cannot reach.

To start, try using a single filament thread that cannot shred or rip easily. Begin by breaking off a piece about 16-20 inches in length. Wrap each end of the floss around one finger on each hand while making sure it is loose enough that you can move up and down the strand as required. If you cannot easily floss with traditional floss, try switching to an electronic interdental tool such as a water flosser.

Floss gently but effectively. Make sure to clean between all teeth and the teeth in the back row. If you are bleeding, you are probably pressing too hard. When flossing, wrap the floss at a ā€œcā€ angle to ensure all sides of the tooth are reached. Never use the same section of floss between more than one tooth. Slide up or down the thread when switching between teeth. It is not a race, and with an ideal amount of effort, you can floss your entire set of teeth in only a few minutes. After you are done flossing, throw the used strand away as you should use a fresh piece each time you floss.
