Unfortunately, dental emergencies happen, even when you’re on the road away from home. Although this is inconvenient, troublesome, and stressful, you need to treat the problem and handle the situation as quickly as possible. This can help you have a restored oral health in a jiffy.

If you have cracked or broken a tooth while you’re away from home, our dentist, Dr. John P. Poovey, has some instructions for you.

First, you should collect all of the tooth pieces. At least as many pieces as possible. This is important because your dentist will try to put the tooth back together. When you collect the pieces, rinse them with water, but be careful not to lose them. When they’re clean, put them in a plastic bag and keep them in a safe place until your appointment.

Second, you should wash your mouth. All you need to do is rinse with warm water. If you’re feeling brave, you can swish saltwater. This can help eliminate any bacteria or infection in the injured oral tissues. After your mouth is clean, ice outside the injured area with a cold compress. Then, take over-the-counter pain medication if the discomfort is too much to handle.

Third, you should schedule an appointment. Call the local dental office and ask them if you could schedule an emergency appointment. Explain the situation and try to schedule the appointment for as soon as possible. While you’re on the phone, try to take care of any insurance or health questions so you don’t have to wait long when you get to the office.
